হংকং ইউনিভার্সিটির পাবলিক হেলথ স্কুলের ভাইরোলজিস্ট লিও পুন বলেন, ‘ভাইরাসটি নিউমোনিয়ার মতো অসুস্থতা তৈরি করে। কিন্তু কোনো অ্যান্টিবায়োটিকে সাড়া দেয় না। তবে করোনা ভাইরাস কতোটা মারাত্মক হয়ে উঠবে তা এখনো পরিষ্কার নয়।’
চীন সরকার বলছে, এখন পর্যন্ত ভাইরাসটিতে অন্তত ৩০০০ জন আক্রান্ত হয়েছে। মৃত্যু হয়েছে ৫৬ জনের। তবে বেসরকারি হিসাব বলছে, আক্রান্তের সংখ্যা আরো বেশি। চীনের নতুন নতুন শহরেও করোনা ভাইরাসের প্রাদুর্ভাব লক্ষ্য করা যাচ্ছে।
এই ভাইরাস ব্যাপক হারে ছড়িয়ে পড়তে পারে বলে সতর্কতা জারি করেছে বিশ্ব স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থা। এছাড়া বিভিন্ন দেশ কীভাবে এই ভাইরাস মোকাবেলার প্রস্তুতি নেবে, আক্রান্ত রোগীদের কীভাবে পর্যবেক্ষণ করতে হবে এবং কী ধরনের চিকিৎসা সেবা প্রদান করবে, সে সম্পর্কে ইতোমধ্যে দিকনির্দেশনাও দিয়েছে সংস্থাটি। নতুন এই ভাইরাসের বিষয়ে সর্বোচ্চ সতর্কতা অবলম্বন করছে বাংলাদেশও।

করোনা ভাইরাস হচ্ছে ভাইরাসে একটি বড় গ্রুপ। অর্থাৎ অনেক ধরনের করোনা ভাইরাস রয়েছে। প্রাণীদের মধ্যে এ ধরনের ভাইরাস কমন। বিরল ক্ষেত্রে এই ভাইরাস বিজ্ঞানীদের ভাষায় জুনোটিক হতে পারে। অর্থাৎ প্রাণী থেকে মানুষের মধ্যে সংক্রমিত হতে পারে। মানুষকে আক্রান্ত করতে পারে এমন ৬টি করোনা ভাইরাস এতদিন পরিচিত ছিল। এখন যেগুলোতে মানুষ সংক্রমিত হচ্ছে সেগুলো নতুন ধরনের করোনা ভাইরাস। আগে থেকে অপরিচিত এই ভাইরাস ভাইরাল নিউমোনিয়াকে মহামারির দিকে ঠেলে দিতে পারে বলে আশঙ্কা করা হচ্ছে।
